Redfield trams

The plan is to build a 4mm scale tram layout based on the former Rednal Terminus in southwest Birmingham, which was abandoned in 1952. In its heyday it was served by trams from Navigation Street, taking an hour to cover the 8 mile route to the terminus. Rednal served a popular beauty spot called the Lickey Hills, which attracted Brummies from right across the city. The prototype was chosen because it offers both a turning loop and run-through possibilities.

We will be using a modular baseboard system developed in the USA, which allows similar boards to be joined together at one location. This will provide us with more flexibility as we build the layout.

Operationally, we plan to feature a loop divided into multiple sections, which will allow automatic running of short-wheelbase trams. This will also provide an area to display those model trams waiting to move off.

Scenery will be minimal, with just a cafe and a curved passenger shelter, plus a few trees.

To date we have constructed two baseboards, and work is now concentrating on getting the wiring and control installed. The current focus is to be able to display Redfield at our club exhibition in October.

We will be uploading images as the baseboards develop over the coming months, but meanwhile here are a couple of the trams already waiting patiently for somewhere to run......
