Weydon Road - Not all running sessions are dominated by chocolate and cream ....

Weydon Road

Weydon Road is the club O gauge layout, with the track plan designed using Templot software. It was started in 2003, and is now nearing completion, but still needs working signals, some modifications to improve performance and the odd extra detail.

Weydon Road is a fictitious location somewhere on the border of the GWR and SR. The livery of most of the stock on the layout fixes the timescale as late 1930s. However, we do run the occasional special train and loco e.g. a steam railmotor.

The layout is run to a sequence of up to 48 moves from the fiddle yards at each end of the layout.

The layout has many planning and design advantages.

We have attempted to produce a layout that allows a broad spread of rolling stock and a high standard of modelling to generate interest from anyone willing to get involved. It has appeared in the Railway Modeller, October 2005 issue.

We have running days for '0' Gauge on the first Wednesday of every month with either Weydon Road or the Test Track set up.

Recent activity

We have concentrated on trying to complete a snags list on Weydon Road like the working signals, only 1 to build and 2 to fit and the track has been completely overhauled. How come track moves after being fixed to the boards? We attended the South Hants Exhibition, with Weydon Road, in March to get us back into the swing of meeting the public, thoroughly enjoyed.

Ron and Ian purchased an ‘0’ Gauge 3 Lane oval Test Track and we’ve all mucked in to make it easier to set up. Before it was finished Ron came up with the idea of having an ‘0’ Gauge Open Day, on May 3rd Bank Holiday, with both the Test Track and Weydon Road on show. We invited David Hammersley of Roxey Models to attend and Dave Smith to run a Loco Clinic/Demo stand. The objective was to take enough on the gate and from sale of tea and cake to cover the cost of the hall hire and the food, Bacon Rolls make anybody’s mouth water. On the day we were helped by other members of the club from the 4mm and 2mm groups and 3 of the ladies ran the kitchen for us.
The result was a success with over 60 visitors and we even made a small profit for the club, and best of all we and the visitors enjoyed ourselves. We encourage visitor participation. Visitors operated Weydon Road to our sequence and also brought a variety of their stock to run on the test track. We had people from as far away as Didcot in one direction and Worthing in the other.

Following the success we’ve already decided to hold another event next year on May 2nd 2011 Bank Holiday with the same entrance fee of £1.00.

We have 2 exhibitions to go to this year the first at Yeovilton, Fleet Air Arm Museum (you get to see Aircraft and Railways at the same time) June 12th and 13th and then at Andover on 4th and 5th September.
